Embracing the Light: A Gentle Approach to New Year Resolutions

As we step into the new year, the allure of resolutions and ambitious goals may beckon, but let’s tread lightly, acknowledging the ebb and flow of life’s demands. While it’s great to set resolutions, outline goals, and intentions with detail, the key is to take it bit by bit, avoiding the weight of strict rules that may lead to quitting before even starting.

In this journey of collective resilience and self-compassion, my resolution centers around inviting more “light” into life. Steering away from rigid “I will” statements, it’s about finding solace in small, achievable steps that contribute to well-being. Lighting candles, a ritual embraced during the Christmas season, has become a serene practice – a reminder that tranquility can be found even in the midst of chaos.

Reading, a passion often sacrificed on the altar of daily demands, finds its place in the routine. Not a daily commitment, but more often than not, dedicating 10-15 minutes to stories that bring joy. It’s a reminder that self-care doesn’t always have to conform to a rigid schedule.

Health takes precedence without the constraints of strict diets or weight-loss goals. Embracing a healthier lifestyle entails regular exercise and a balanced diet. If a slice of pizza accompanies a day of running, it’s not a setback but a success to the flexibility we afford ourselves in our pursuit of well-being.

In the spirit of collective survival, let’s not forget the importance of kindness. We’re all navigating a world where thriving seems distant, and appreciating those around us becomes paramount. Sharing kindness daily becomes a beacon, acknowledging the light others bring into our lives and reciprocating by being a light in theirs.

On this epiphany of January 6th, my family and I engage in a unique tradition. Blindfolded, we select mantras from a pool of 25 possible options. Ours this year – peace, generosity, love, compassion, friendship, grace, imagination, and patience. These mantras, chosen for their resonance, become guiding lights for the year ahead. Even our four-legged companions partake in this shared journey, adding an extra layer of connection to our chosen path.

As we orbit the sun once more, let’s not shy away from setting resolutions, outlining goals, and even being detailed about certain paths we wish to traverse this year. However, let’s do so with a gentle approach, allowing room for adjustments and understanding that the journey may not always adhere to strict rules. In the grand adventure of self-improvement, it’s the small, consistent steps that lead to lasting transformation. May this year be a celebration of progress, not perfection.
